We Love Rock n Roll

January 12, 2019 by Jo Anne Yada

My kindergarteners already know the song I Love Rock n Roll by Joan Jett, but this week, they learned the story behind who sings it. They learned that not everyone thought girls could play rock n roll music, but a certain fierce female showed them! Joan was in an all-girl band called The Runaways when she was a teenager. It seemed like they were always fighting, and Joan was the one who took the music the most seriously. So she went out on her own and not only started a band, but she made her own music label. She was told NO so many times, she decided to do it all herself. And we love her for it!

As we listened to I Love Rock n Roll, we listened for her to sing, “Owwww” and “Weeeooowwww,” the way a lion would yell out a, “Rawr!” We also drew her hair flying because she would just feel the music and let it all out.

This student drew her baby brother on drums!
